GOALS/ACHIEVEMENT
So much has been said about goal-setting and achievement that much of the wisdom has been watered down, and become full of clichés.
Here at Live-With-Power, we are all about RESULTS. Whatever you have read and learned about setting goals and achieving your dreams, it has all contained valuable insights, no doubt. The missing key for you could be: did you APPLY what you learned?

While knowing what you want in life is a sure start to getting it, many people - if they do it at all - make the mistake of taking goal-setting too seriously. They feel that if they set a goal and start working towards it, it’s ‘do or die.’ They may be unconsciously sabotaging themselves because they worry that they’ll feel like a failure if they don’t acheive their goal/s. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Here’s a big secret: You can’t know what you want until you start trying for it, and discover what you really like and do not like. For instance, let’s say you dream of owning a yacht some day, simply because to you, that yacht means ‘I’ve made it.’ You have endowed that mental image of your yacht with tremendous power: it holds all of your dreams about who you think you can be, and conversely the power to make you feel like a complete loser if you never get it. Let’s take it further and imagine that you work unfailingly and finally GET the yacht…and to your dismay you discover you hate boating, and get seasick all the time. Is this really the dream you wanted? Of course not! What you most likely really wanted was to feel successful, happy, satisfied, and respected and admired by your peers - and by yourself.
The people who win in life - meaning they get what they want and they feel passionate and happy doing it - are the people who TRY. They do NOT know exactly how things are going to turn out, but they have clear ideas of how they want to feel when they succeed. They figure out what works as they go along, and they work towards their goals with persistence.
Another pitfall that is very common is striving for what someome else wants for you. If your paretns have always expected you to become a lawyer and you ahve never really questioned it, you may feel a vague sense of hollowness gnawing at you. This is a hidden thorn digging into your side, and it won’t stop until you acknowledge and explore your feelings. Perhaps you are not suited to be a lawyer at all! Perhaps it is time for some introspection into what kind of life you’d really like to live - one which will bring you personal satisfaction and true happiness.
The way to set goals and achieve them with joy and motivation is to make them personal to you, and to be flexible enough to learn and adjust as you go along. Here are a couple of articles to get you started:*
